Where else in America can you stand in four different states at once—New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona? That’s the magic of the Four Corners it is the only place in the U.S. where state lines meet in one spot. But here’s the thing—the Four Corners is so much more than just a quirky roadside stop. It is more than a geographical point on a map.

This rugged corner of the Southwest is bursting with very diverse cultures, unbelievable landscapes, epic festivals, and more outdoor adventures than a lifetime could experience. The very moment you arrive, you will quickly realize the way of life is different in the Four Corners. I promise that after you’ve experienced the Four Corners, you will want to come back……or stay! Whether you’re just road tripping, backpacking wilderness, throwing flies at trout, or chasing new flavors in this four corners travel guide you will find out the 10 reasons why the Four Corners should be on your must do travel list!
1. Stand in Four States at Once
Let’s start with the obvious—you can literally stand in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona all at the same time. It’s the only spot in America where this is possible, and yes, it does make for a nice road-trip photo. But once you’ve got your selfie, settle in—the real treasures lie beyond this monument. From this point, look in any direction and you will find a new adventure.
2. Diverse Cultures

The Four Corners is one of the most culturally rich regions in the U.S. Here, the Navajo, Hopi, Apache, and Ute tribes keep centuries-old traditions alive through incredible art, storytelling, language, and ceremonies. Add the element of Spanish colonization—seen in adobe architecture, Catholic missions, fiestas, and of course, food—(oh the wonderful food!!) and you’ve got a vibrant cultural crossroads.
This isn’t just a trip; it’s a walk through living history.
3. Festivals & Events Year-Round
Adventure in the Four Corners isn’t just about landscapes—it’s about people coming together to celebrate. Whether you love rodeos, running in epic marathons, powwows, or bluegrass festivals, there’s always something happening.
- Arizona: Overland Expo West, Pickin’ in the Pines, Northern Navajo Nation Fair
- Utah: Canyonlands Half Marathon, Moab Rocks Mountain Bike Festival
- Colorado: Ouray Ice Festival, Durango’s Snowdown, Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo
- New Mexico: Balloon Fiesta, Zozobra, Riverfest

Whatever your passion, there’s an event waiting.
4. Breathtaking Landscapes
Few regions pack this much of a scenic punch: In every direction the landscape changes and offers epic adventure and exploration.

- High Desert Sagebrush Plains with big skies, tall mesas and unique geological formations scattered across the landscape.
- Canyon Country like Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, and Canyon de Chelly.
- Tall Snowcapped Peaks in the San Juans, La Sals, and beyond. Durango Colorado is the gateway to 14,000 foot mountains.
- Geological Marvels like Shiprock, Angel Peak, the Painted Desert, and the iconic Bisti Badlands.
It’s no wonder photographers and adventurers from around the world flock here!

5. National Parks
The Four Corners is a jackpot for national parks and monuments. You can explore:
- Mesa Verde (CO): Ancient cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans.
- Arches & Canyonlands (UT): Red rock playgrounds with epic hikes.
- Hovenweep: Towers near Mesa Verde built by the Ancestral Puebloans.
- Grand Canyon (AZ): One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
- Chaco Canyon (NM): A UNESCO World Heritage site with ruins older than Machu Picchu.
- Aztec Ruins (NM): One of my favorite historic sites to visit. Easy to get to and easy to see. A must stop for anyone passing through!
It’s like stepping into multiple worlds—all in one region.
6. Outdoor Adventures for Everyone
No matter your speed—adrenaline junkie or slow traveler—the Four Corners delivers:

- Hiking & backpacking
- Mountain biking & bikepacking
- Rock climbing & mountaineering
- Whitewater rafting & kayaking
- Fly fishing (epic fly fishing on the San Juan River) & hunting
- Camping under some of the darkest skies in the U.S.
Like I’ve always say, “If you could surf here, you’d never have to leave.”

7. Stargazing & Dark Skies
Speaking of skies… the Four Corners is home to some of the best stargazing in North America. Places like Hovenweep National Monument and Natural Bridges National Monument are certified International Dark Sky Parks. Imagine camping out under the Milky Way so bright it feels like you can reach out and touch it. Hovenweep is a personal favorite. It is close to Cortez Colorado, but feels like in the middle of no where. Hovenweep is located at the end of lonely road with the park being its main destination. It is definitely worth a visit.
8. Unique Small Towns
The towns scattered across the Four Corners have their own quirky charm:

- Durango, CO: A railroad town with breweries, tacos, and strong mountain vibe.
- Moab, UT: Outdoor adventure central, with trails for every kind of explorer.
- Farmington, NM: A cultural hub with surprising food diversity.
- Flagstaff, AZ: College town meets adventure basecamp at 7,000 feet.
Each makes the perfect basecamp for exploring.
9. Incredible Food & Flavors
The food alone is worth the trip! The Four Corners is a melting pot of Indigenous, Spanish, Mexican, and frontier influences. Must-tries include:

- Green Chile Cheeseburgers (actually we put green Chile on everything here!)
- Navajo Tacos & Frybread
- Blue Corn Mush
- Stacked Red Chile Enchiladas (New Mexico Style-with an egg over easy and sour cream!!!)
- Stuffed Sopapillas
Don’t skip the local breweries either—Durango and Moab both deliver with overwhelming amount of incredible choices.
10. Adventure Basecamp for the Southwest
Finally, the Four Corners isn’t just a destination—it’s a launch pad. From here, you’re within driving distance of the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyon Lands, Taos, Telluride, Santa Fe, San Juan Mountain Range and endless amounts of hidden gems in every direction.
Think of it as your adventure hub, with endless road trips radiating outward.
Final Thoughts
The Four Corners isn’t just where four states meet—it’s where cultures, landscapes, adventures, and flavors collide. Whether you’re chasing history, adrenaline, or that perfect the perfect green Chile cheeseburger (even the McDonald’s here have green chile cheeseburgers), you’ll find it here.
So go ahead—pack your boots, your camera, and your appetite. Stand in four states at once, then wander far beyond the monument. Adventure is waiting!
